The province of Alberta appointed an “official administrator,” Douglas Lagore, to monitor the city council of Chestermere and approve many of its decisions due to “increasing dysfunction” among the council members. In a written statement to Postmedia, Municipal Affairs Minister Ric McIvor noted the provincial government had been aware of “significant governance concerns” for several months. The official administrator has the power to quash any council decisions and has to approve certain decisions before they take effect. Minister McIver stated that the official administrator wouldn’t interfere with regular city business but would prevent decisions that could contribute to further dysfunction within the council.
