City workers unionize

Posted underUnionCopied!

City workers of Chestermere voted to join the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). Of the 88 secret ballots cast, 85% voted in favour of unionizing. The workforce will join CUPE Local 37, which also represents outdoor workers at the City of Calgary and public employees at a handful of smaller municipalities in southern Alberta. The employees began organizing in January due to concerns surrounding job security, and the ballots were sealed pending the resolution of a dispute over the inclusion of roughly 20 employees in the bargaining unit. The status of those employees will be debated as the union and the city deliberate their first collective bargaining agreement. Some city staffers have reported that employee losses have reached into the dozens since the election of the current mayor and council in October. The mayor has denied that the unionization effort started as a result of his election.
